After the 2009 season came to an end Tom decided it was the perfect time in the off season to really check out why the Miata’s engine was not producing the horsepower numbers it should. The problems are found really quickly using a compression gauge and a leak down tester. Cylinder #1 has 110 psi and 45% leakage, cylinders 2 and 3 are within specs, while cylinder 4 has 130 psi and 30% leakage. The engine is taken out and sent to get refreshed. After the engine problems were all taken care of a quick dyno check was necessary. Vic Sias of Sias Tuning was able to put the Miata on the dyno and give us the good news, the missing power was back and a couple extra. The proof would soon be shown.

the quick run down of 2009:

-SCCA San Diego National Tour-
Head down to the San Diego nation tour taking a gamble and trying out the new 13 inch Hoosier tires against the 15s everyone else (including Tom and I) have been running. To prepare for the season we roll the dice and throw the 13″ tires on at an event we know everyone will bring the “A” game, the San Diego Nation Tour.

The first day we realize the smaller diameter tires don’t have the cornering grip of the big 275/35/15s. The event is almost a waste but gives us what we want, a true result.

I finish 3rd in CSP with a time of 107.050. (the winner had a 105.956)
I still paxed in 5th place out of 272 drivers

______________________________________________________

-SCCA El Toro Pro Solo-
Since this event is also located in Southern California the car was left with the complete small tire setup. Pro Solo we figured the smaller, lighter weight tires would really shine. This actually was an advantage.

I won CSP with a time of 81.168 with a gap to second place of 1.007
paxed 7th for the event

______________________________________________________
-SCCA Wendover, UT. Pro Solo-
Wendover is located in high elevation which kills all of power we do have. Since a Pro Solo is shorter course and acceleration is more important we decided to leave the 13s on the car (they still had a god amount of rubber left). The trip quickly took a turn for the worse. A few of our competitors couldn’t make the trip and we got moved to bump class 2. At this point we knew the first couple spots were gone, we were running against Tom Berry and Marshall Grice in the BSP evo.
Everything was against us:
Elevation-they have a turbo
pro-they have all wheel drive
It was entering a race just hoping for third. That didn’t happen Lorin Mueller in his FSP Focus took third. I finished 4th 1.2 seconds back.
paxed 28th for the event.

______________________________________________________
-SCCA Packwood, WA National Tour-
Back on the 15s! The big tires, car setup and all the grip was back. The event went very well. Tom and I ended up 1,2 .
I paxed 2nd. only .002 away from top PAX Jerry Jenkins in his ES miata

______________________________________________________
-SCCA Packwood, WA Pro Solo-
Again Tom and I 1,2 in CSP.
I paxed 2nd again just this time to Marshall Grice in the BSP Evo by .248

______________________________________________________
These were the last two big events before nationals. We end up doing one last dyno tune just to change a few settings for some different fuel. At the dyno we find we are down on power. It could be one of two things either for some strange reason the dyno is reading different because the car has felt pretty close to the same all season or the engine has just been getting weak.

Its way too late to worry about it, so the car gets loaded and we pack everything up for Lincoln, NE.

______________________________________________________
-SCCA Pro Finale Lincoln, NE-
My first morning run second gear comes apart. I run all my morning runs shifting from 1st to 3rd gear, amazingly enough not in last place. After morning runs we scramble to find Keith and Kristi Brown and borrow their Trailer (with a lift). Tom carries spare everything in the truck, so we have all the parts and tools ready to go. With the help of a group of friends (Curtis and Jenifer Lee, Tom and Matt Ellam, Keith Brown, and I know I’m missing couple people, Tom and I) we change the transmission before afternoon runs for the ladies. I have heard people say it took us between 45-90 mins. Whatever it was we didn’t miss anything and it worked out in the end, we got all of our runs.

Following our afternoon runs I got a disturbing question. Hey Scott, why does it look like you aren’t going all out in the back straight. Your competitor is running away like you aren’t floored. You might want to check the throttle cable. Right then it hit, they dyno was right, we really are way down on power.

I end up pulling it together and winning the CSP Pro Finale
paxed 2nd .872 behind Jeff Kiesel in his EM Sprite

______________________________________________________
-SCCA National Championship Lincoln, NE.
We know we are down on power compared to most of the competitors but thats what we have. The first day I cone away my fastest time that would have given me the day 1 lead, instead I was in second. The second day was a horsepower course and we didn’t have it. I slipped back into 3rd place. I was still happy. At the start of the season I told myself if I could duplicate the results from the season before I would be happy and I did just that.
paxed 33

(sorry for the short descriptions trying to catch up to 2010)

This Sunday, May 17th will be the 42nd annual Duel at De Anza. I will be attending the event for my 11th year co-driving Tom Kubo’s CSP Miata. Last year’s event went really well, setting second fast time of the day following Vic Sias in his monster Street Mod M3. This year, we have made a few changes to the Miata, specific to this event to hopefully give Vic a better run. This year we hope to have the picture in picture in-car video working and data acquisition for everyone to get an idea of how the car works.

Try to make it out an support De Anza College auto shop.
info

see you there!

Long story short, I was not able to run the car and before the news actually set in, Rob Boynton offered his Midland Cabinet sponsored ASP 2002 GT2 Porsche. I co-drove the Porsche with Rob in 2004 for numerous events and a few years ago it was completely rebuilt with all the trick parts. So this was a familiar car (last time i drove it was sometime in early 2008 or maybe even 2007).

It ends up the car was a rough ride and the shocks were not adjusted properly for the surface. The car set up overall was well enough for me to edge Rob out of the first spot and we won first and second place for ASP.

At the end of the 2007 season I realized the Kubo Miata wasn’t performing to it’s true potential, so I went back and began to learn suspension and some theory in more depth. This opened my eyes and I found everything I was trying to accomplish through out the year was wrong.

So I tore the car apart and began to rebuild it better.

The shocks got taken to Guy Ankeny so he could work his magic on the triple adjustable Penskes. More weight got taken out of the car and some added for a seat weight rule. The springs were changed for different rates and different ride heights.

The completely new car seemed to work well right out of the box. The winter homework locally was paying off, and the car was pretty well planted and easy to drive. A few changes through out the year and here is a brief summary of the year.

SCCA Solo overview

San Deigo, CA National Tour: 1st in class, 1st in ,PAX,

Packwood, WA National tour: 1st in class, 1st in ,PAX,

Topeka, KS Pro Solo Finale: 1st in class (CSP Pro Solo National Champion) 86th in ,PAX, (out of 215 drivers. car wasn’t set up too well for the rain)

Topeka, KS Autocross National Championship: 3rd in class, 24th in ,PAX, (out of 1058 drivers)

(I didn’t include any of the local events and the Divisional series but will add them later)

I was picked to win by Sports Car Magazine but due to a mechanical problem my first run it was too much of a deficit to bounce back. So this year, just like last, the car is getting torn apart and rebuilt finding a few tenths of a second to hopeful enjoy another winning season!

The Pro Solo Finale this year brought memories from last year’s National Championship. RAIN! Although this wasn’t the drying conditions of last year this was hurricane weather. Friday (the first true day of competition) brought flood warnings and three inches of rain, perfect weather for a Miata without a top.

The rain was coming down so bad the Pro Solo equipment failed for morning runs making it a flag drop practice with no timing, just so the competitors could get an idea of the course. Ladies 2 class went before the open class, so we helped Kathy Wolfskill (Tom’s CSP ladies driver) get ready and she ran her four runs trouble free without wipers (electrical problems I had not fixed, we do run most events in California). It was difficult to see where she was stacking up because no times were shown.

After a few run groups it was CSP open run. Being the first driver I jumped into the cold puddle of a seat get the engine warmed up and pull to the line. When I’m just about to get my helmet scanned i rev the engine to pull forward. The engine revs instandly up to 5,000 rpms and stays, i can’t get it to lower…. Tom comes over opens the hood to find a 3/8 inch hole in the intake manifold. The person who ported the intake used JB weld or some other epoxy to fill a vacuum port that was no longer used. The vibration from the engine over time had won and the plug got sucked into the engine. Tom had me stop the engine and the car was pushed back to the pits. Morning runs were done for both of us.

Back at the pits.

Tom and I pulled the upper intake off the engine and handed it to Jeff Keisel who happened to know a local TIG welder who could weld the hole while he waited. At this point I found a crack running from cylinder #1-3 and starting on cylinder 4 on the intake. Apparently Mazda engineers were right, the extra support brace is needed. It was too late to get the intake completely welded, we had to finish the Pro. Tom and I continued on the car. Pulling the spark plugs, checking inside the intake for the missing plug. Nothing was found but when we turned the engine over without plugs and it looked as if something (maybe some left over dust) came shooting out of the combustion chamber. We cleaned the intake mating surface and got ready for Jeff to return with the upper intake manifold.

Afternoon Runs for Kathy was coming and Jeff wasn’t back. The car wouldn’t be ready for her runs leaving it to her Saturday morning runs since the morning runs had no timer.

We were able to get the everything back together for the open afternoon runs. Crossing our fingers the engine wasn’t hurt we ran the afternoon runs without any easy testing on the engine. It ran great and the intake manifold held together. I was able to leave the first day of the Pro Solo event with the lead.

The second day of the finale was a gamble if the intake would hold together long enough to finish the event. Kathy’s runs went well she finished without problems. The rain had stopped and the other CSP competitors swapped over to dry condition tires. After last years gamble with running the dry tires in the drying conditions and it not paying off for Kathy, Tom wanted to leave the wets on (it was also easier to leave the wets on). Tom needed to win the Finale and I could finish second so we could one, two the points chase in the series.

I ran again first because of leading from the first day runs. This worked great for us considering it was a toss up, rain or dry tires. I rolled up to the burn out box and knowing it was wet and wanting to get heat in the tires I got to practice my left foot braking burn out! (check out video on youtube, not up yet). I ran my four runs and didn’t improve that much while everyone else shrunk my lead.

So for Tom’s runs I told him he had to swap tires and run the drys. He agreed and it was a fire drill changing tires and getting everything ready for him to take his runs. Tom goes out and keeps dropping every run. He continues this and gets to his last run on the right side only having to drop two tenths to take the victory and finish second for the series. Well, he went to the first corner and spun… game over. it ended up he got second for the event and third for the series. Best Finish for Tom at the Finale and best series finish. So considering all the problems, headaches and running around we still finished smiling!

The Duel at De Anza is a fund raiser for the local community college auto shop program. I attended it as a relocation program in high school and only took it for one semester but learned tips and information I still use to this day.

Every year about the third Sunday in May it takes place in a parking lot on the campus. Local shops and other individuals sponsor the event and lend a helping hand to make everything come together. Michael Brandt has been one of the main teachers keeping the event going through out the years. Peggy and Dennis Hale from the UFO make sure everything is positive from helping register to announcing and of course bringing some of the needed equipment. Mike Camicia of Gunn High School announce and keep the crowd laughing, giving insight to different driving styles (worth watching the event just for the commentary), and yes he does actually know what he is talking about first hand!

OK, so back to the driving stuff.

Your driving time is determined arrival time to the tech line. After tech, they file you into rows and they simply go down the rows. So if you are first there you run first, nice and simple. If you have multiple drivers the first driver runs, comes back, the car waits on the sideline while the next driver jumps in. So my row gets called up. Top time of the day at the time was my friend, Rob Boynton and a car I co-drove a few years ago the seal grey 2002 Porsche GT2. We warm the engine of Tom Kubo’s Miata, push it up to into the main line and about three cars away from running they stop for lunch.

Nice, a couple more course walks never hurt.

Get back from my extra course walks with a few new ideas about different lines and run the course. The car is a little loose in a couple corners but for the most part working nicely. 46.985 quick enough to take Top Time of the day away from Rob.

Now the waiting game begins.

Tom Kubo (owner of the Miata) goes out for his runs and wasn’t able to continue his 2 win streak and ends up second in class with a time of 47.9–.
Vic runs his monster SM E36 M3 at the end of the end of the day and ends up beating my time leaving me with a 1st in class and 2nd overall.

Another great year driving at the Duel at De Anza

(pictures and movies to come in the next couple days)

After a tough winter of rewiring the Electromotive tec3, shipping the shocks to ProPartsUSA to have Guy Ankeny rebuild the Penske shocks, it was finaly time to put the car to the real test. San Deigo National Tour, some of the fastest competitors for CSP would be there.

The practice went well with only a couple noise warnings and a fresh set of Hoosier A6s scrubbed in. Tom, Kathy and I were set for the weekend.

Saturday -more to come

Sunday-more to come

this is from SCCA’s website. (oh and Bill owns the car Reijo was 2007 CSP champion)

The largest class of the weekend, C Street Prepared, was won by Scott Fraser, of San Jose, Calif. Fraser’s Siastuning/A.R.E. Mazda Miata took a 0.908-second win over the MiataRoadster.com/HiDef Racing Mazda Miata of defending National Champion Bill Schenker, from Los Angeles, who might have had a better shot had it not been for those four cone penalties.
